jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 After looking at the manual I have a question about biasing that hopefully
Marshall or someone who luckily already has the AFD 100 can answer. The .pdf file says to bias the amp, hold the FX Loop switch while powering up the amp.

Report

jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 Well since the FX Loop switch appears to be a toggle switch do you hold it in the up or down position, and if it is already in the required position why does it have to be held ? Also when powering up the amp while holding the FX Loop switch, does the procedure work only if the power AND standby switch are same postion (i.e. power on AND standby engaged) ?

Report

Cassp0nk

Posted 1 year ago by Cassp0nk @Jupiter - those small switches are non latching, so you toggle them to change mode but the switch springs back. Which is how you can hold it when you power on to trigger self biassing. This non latching is pretty sensible when you think about it as those toggles are also foot switchable.

Posted 1 year ago by Mr.MiteyMites @Santiago: Hey, just to let you know, in this PDF owners manual, I found a tiny mistake. On page 5 at the very bottom right, last paragraph in the "PleaseNote" section the AFD100 is referred to as the ADF 100. Not a big deal to me, but thought you would want to know if printing more Manuals. Thanks again for taking this project on. I am very excited to try my new Marshall!

Welshman

Posted 1 year ago by Welshman My Amp has finally arrived!! Three and a half weeks in transit!
Thankfully, I think the amp DOES actually live up to the hype!
The power control means you can get some glorious tones at bedrrom levels and there are far more tones available from the amp than I was expecting. When you drop the guitar volume, it cleans up really nicely.
Forst impressions - WELL DONE MARSHALL!

Report

Welshman

Posted 1 year ago by Welshman @Jupiter89, in answer to your query, both the fx loop and the mode switch are non-latching toggle switches - ie when you press them down, they go back up when you release them - that's why you need to hold the fx loop switch down to activate the auto bias.
Oops, I meant FIRST impressions in my last post!

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 Thanks Cassp0nk and Welshman well your responces answered my question. Sure I saw the video, but you could not tell that the toggle switch was a non-latching type. I don't think Marshall ever used one of these, and before your posts, I did not even know they even were made. Simple and effective, now when do I get to try it out is the difficult question !

Report

matsandersson

Posted 1 year ago by matsandersson Santiago how much does the output stage really distort on the AFD? Saw a demo where Chris G Used the effects loop level control as a master volume and when he turned it down the signal to the output stage should decrease and so also the output distortion. Still the amp sounded exactly the same.

MHyypia

Posted 1 year ago by MHyypia Backslash, I have my AFD100 and the effects loop is really like in any other amp. It really depends on the pedal. The MXR Blacklabel chorus would not work well in the effects loop, but my TC Electronics Nova Repeater (delay) is absolutely fine. I'm guessing most reverbs would be fine there as well. The Chorus is absolutely fine in front of the amp in case you were wondering.

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Would a Boss RV-5 be better in the effects loop or in front? I have the Slash crybaby, Boss DD-3 and MXR M-134 stereo chorus all at the front of the amp and they sound great! haven't yet bought the rv-5 though. Just wondering if anybody has had the opportunity to try it out or at least has experience from other amp heads. Cheers.

Posted 1 year ago by bondy1978 @backslash - I have messed about with pedals on mine - my Lee jackson Mr Springgy Reverb pedal and trex delay suck straight into the amp (my other amps take them great)... When put in the fx loop they sound awesome. My ts808 goes great straight into the amp and is a good boost for solos etc

Report

bondy1978

Posted 1 year ago by bondy1978 @backslash, Boss CE2 chorus, red witch phaser, Dr Scientist the cleaness, Slash Wah and G.I fuzz all work great in the front of the amp - it was only the delay and reverb that sounded rubbish unless put in the fx loop - My Orange Head and Fender BJ take them far better through the front of the amp. Also tried a Malekko Chicklet reverb and it sounded rubbish in fx loop and in the front of the amp.

Report

bondy1978

Posted 1 year ago by bondy1978 @slaashgnr - personally i think that my reverb pedal sounds better in the fx loop (which is a ball ache to have to re wire my pedal board and have more leads to trip over). I used to own a JCM800 which took reverb through the front of the amp far better than the AFD.. Not tried the RV-5 through it.... Ultimately it'll be down to your personal taste

2- slash uses a jubilee with kt88 for clean tones

hope this helps ;)

Posted 1 year ago by brotor @endat and @wannabeafd - he uses AFD's for cleans also now. he announced it on twitter a little while ago. He has only afd's in his rig now. and as endat states. his tech switches between the amps for him. I imagine he uses an AFD head on the low sense input an little or no gain for clean now.

Report

endat

Posted 1 year ago by endat i hate to say it but i do wonder if they put out that info so it will further help selling out this amp, i must say i find it hard to believe that slash uses a head that was designed especially for dirty tone and cleans up little bit by guitar volume for his legend clean sound cos i must say i love his clean sound as much as i do his dirty, but if it is true thats brilliant!!!!

Report

endat

Posted 1 year ago by endat @ brotor- thats seriously good news if the afd head can be used for cleans as much as dirty cos i was persuming i would have to get another head if i was to be fussy about my clean tone!!!

Report

RicMoura

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura @all, Slash did say that he was switch all his heads for the AFD100, but I think he was refering to his dirty sound only, not clean.
Anyway, I still didn't get my AFD head yet, but I've seen someone in youtube using it in clean, and it's not bad. Taking out all the gain, and with the help of the guitar volume it's ok.

MrVanz

Posted 1 year ago by MrVanz Ok one question: Did Slash use the #34 amp live? I know he used it for UYI 1 & 2 and the 2 VR albums but did he also use it at live concerts? Because I really like the sound of the 1992 concert in Tokyo, especially here when his playing some flamenco n' blues stuff!!

Report

Welshman

Posted 1 year ago by Welshman @all, the AFD DOES clean up nicely when you roll off the guitar volume, but I'm going to be using an a/b/y switch with my Mesa MkV head running in to one side of my cabs and the AFD running in to the other. This will effectively give me a 4 channel (5 if you include the 34 mode) amp with the ability to run two different channels at the same time. WHAT A RIG!

Report

Welshman

Posted 1 year ago by Welshman I'm also still looking for a nice reverb. So far I've trimmed the field down to 4:

TC Nova NR1 Reverb

It was used with two of the output tubes removed, effectively halving the power. Not sure if it was no.34 though.
The Tokyo gig is all Silver Jubes, clean and dirty. His rig is shown briefly on the DVD intro.

Posted 1 year ago by simonfuckinroll I just compared the AFD100 with my old JCM Slash - they are VERY different. The JCM Slash head has generally a warmer tone - more vintage and more kind of a typical Marshall sound. The EQ is way more effective. I'm not sure what amp I like better.

Report

Posted 1 year ago by simonfuckinroll The #34 sounds a bit thin and it's like theres a filter or fixed wah in front of the amp. A bit weird. Alomst synthetical. The AFD sound is much better - it doesn't only have more Gain it's also fatter with more punch. I should auto-bias the amp next time maybe it gets better...

I really dont think it woulda killed em to include it on this amp and make it a real killer combo. but i spose it makes ppl buy 2 amps instead of one.....maybe their plan all along? lol

Report

brotor

Posted 1 year ago by brotor @jujamakill - don't think there's any "plan" of getting people to buy more amps. It's based on the original AFD amp, wich was a one channel amp, as all the really great marshall's are. in ex. jcm800 (2203), the JPM, Vintage Modern, the plexi's etc.

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 I have read on the Marshall Forum (not confirmed), that the California safety laws are delaying the AFD 100's from being shipped in the US. The distributor should ship to all the other 49 states, and tell California to fuck off. I fell bad for the California residents that want one of the AFD 100's, but is it possible for them to get the amp shipped from a dealer in another state ?

Report

jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 God dammit CA is almost creating a black market for these amps ! The thing that disturbs me more than the delay is the possibility that any changes to the amp in order to kiss California's ass may affect the tone or features - hope that won't happen. Marshall - please deny or confirm the delay and how our amps will be affected !!!

A little of topic but in the launch video while he was playing the SCOM intro it sounded a little dry. In his rig he doesn't have a reverb so I was wondering how it is that he'd do it live, I went to go see him last year at the Norva and he played it really well...

Posted 1 year ago by Sundance Today I called Thomann - they took the AFD down from their web site bc. they have already sold their quota & are not taking any more orders. The cust. rep. said that those who have ordered and paid in advance will definitely receive their amps. They did not receive anything from Marshall yet but should be one of the first dealers in Europe so I guess "all we need is just a little patience..." ;)

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR @seb360 - yes you're right, slash has no reverb in his rig. He relies on the natural reverb of the venue. It does make it slightly better but I really do think he needs reverb to achieve his original tone from back in the day. I might send my afd100 and see if they can fit a reverb onto it that is slashy :P haha even a standard marshall reverb would do really. they all sound the same

Posted 1 year ago by steve01 Beware anyone with a afd100 you can rub the writing of the rear panel very easily as stoof reported. I just tried it with mine it just flakes off. Marshall this is very poor for an amp at this price, especiall as some of the writing is important or safety related.

Just be patient and you'll get your amp. Emailing Marshall, calling out Santiago, bugging your retailer, none of that is going to speed up the process. I'll happily keep strummimg away on my Mesa Stiletto and continue to debate which one becomes my backup ;)

jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 What stoof and steve01 mentioned about lettering on the rear panel rubbing off (lets' hope not the front as well !) is quite disturbing on a quality amp as this. I doubt this can be corrected on future amps in production unless Marshall has their vendor send replacement panels done to meet quality standards.

Report

jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 If I worked for Marshall I would threaten to sever any future business relationship with the firm that makes the panels unless they could replace the defective ones and correct their lack of quality control.

Report

jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 This issue with the lettering rubbing off is like purchasing and paying for a good quality book only to find out the printing was done with a injet printer ! Read it but what ever you do don't touch it. Marshall - you guys need to put a fire under someone's ass !

Report

steve01

Posted 1 year ago by steve01 I dont dare test the lettering on the front to see if it rubs off. I suppose if to much of the lettering comes of the back i'll have to refer to the picture of the panel in the manual to see whats what. I'd be interested to hear what Marshall have to say on the matter. Awsome sounding amp though!

Report

kelv_w

Posted 1 year ago by kelv_w Tried rubbing the lettering on the front and back plate but have no issues with it. No flaking and smearing etc. He might be just unlucky.

Report

jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 It could be the "Mains Input" that was rubbed off was never on the panel when made and Marshall had to add it afterwards using a less than durable method that thier panel supplier uses in making the panels. ( see stoof's link) - Just conjecture. I am going to apply to Marshall for a job in the Quality Control department - quality will go up and heads will roll. lol

Report

steve01

Posted 1 year ago by steve01 Its not just the "mains in input" i just ran my nail over part of the slashes signature on the back and it just flaked off. Pushing my amp up against the wall and not touching it again, too risky.

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman in a live-scenario you don't need a reverb.. usually you'd try to achieve depth with a delay or combination of delays.
in a recording situation you'd record without a reverb and add it later to the mix..

Report

Sundance

Posted 1 year ago by Sundance @SlashGNR: nice move - buy an exclusive signature tube amp and then f$%k up the sound with a cheap little digi reverb & chorus :) I guess the next step will be the ultimate Slash signature reverb pedal... :-/

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR After research on the 3 reverb pedals, the most recommended is the line 6 verbzilla. It seems the most versatile too, and for the price it's not so much of a loss if it does not work well. Sundace, I appreciate you saying that, fully understand where you come from, and Franktheman you too, but . . .

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Some people cannot afford studio recording equipment and rackmounted equipment to add reverb after the recording :P haha I'm just experimenting as old slash tone was filled with reverb.

Report

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman reverb kills the tone.. it's not a matter of "afford".
if you record/mix a guitar then you use reverb to make the guitar fit in the mix. Then you use a reverb-plugin that you can afford.. I have several expensive UAD plugins.. but any other (free) will do as well on a guitar.(If not you'll not be posting here)

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman In a live situation you'll lose a lot of your "presence" when using too much reverb. There are people over at the Axe-FX forum that use the early reflexions of the reverb and not the decay(but instead let the room handle that) ! I doubt that a pedal can do that.
More experienced players (Lukather and others) use a combination of delays to get a reverbish sound.
Slash is not using a reverb.

Report

Sundance

Posted 1 year ago by Sundance @Franktheman: I guess many people will use that amp for playing in their own living room. That's where a reverb would make sense. Check out the T-Rex Room Mate, it's a little more expensive but pushes the digital reverb through a tube to smoothen things up.

Report

bondy1978

Posted 1 year ago by bondy1978 @maxamus - thanks for the kind words maxamus... Slash prefers vintage 30s in his cab but the cab i play through is an old JCM800 cab from the 80's with the original speakers (GT75s or something like that). They work for me anyway.

Report

RicMoura

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura @maxamus, about the cab, I have a Slash signature cab, with V30 in it, wich I've been using with the AFD100. sounds cool. But somehow I was having the feeling that it didn't sound as good as when I tried at the local store (with a different cab, don't recall what was it).

Report

RicMoura

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura (cont) So I tried with a 425 cab that I have (the Vintage Modern one), and it sounded much better. With all this I went searching for information on what cab Slash could be using during the record of Appetite, and the majority claims that he used a 1960hw. Those who tried with this cab say that it sounds killer, and they also state that next to this cab the best one is indeed the 425!

Report

RicMoura

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura (cont) This really surprised me, cause as we all know, Slash uses his signature cabs (the same as 1960v, with a Slash logo), but apparently he used 1960hw in the Appetite recording, as well as in the Live like a Suicide. He then used Greenbacks to record all his albuns from UY, until the Ain't life Grand album in wich he switched to Vintage 30. His been using the Vintage 30 since.

Report

RicMoura

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura (cont) I really like the AFD100 with the 425 cab, and I'd love to try with those 1960hw. There are 1960hw with G12H 30 Heritage, and with G12H 30 Anniversary (new ones). Probably the G12H 30 Heritage are better. It seems that the G12H 30 Anniversary are harsher and not as smooth.
There you go. Hope it helps.
Cheers

Posted 1 year ago by brickford @RicMoura .. what type of guage wire do you have inside your cab... those crappy .22 gauge that Marshall use are tone killers .. people often spend silly money on a Monster speaker cable then stop right at the last thing right before the speakers.... i use .10 gauge & soldered and it really is equal to the Monster or Evidence cables

Report

bondy1978

Posted 1 year ago by bondy1978 @maxamus - I think it's just that to his ears, vintage 30's sound the best/create a sound he's most happy with. A lot of people who have bought or tried the AFD will agree and a lot (including me) will disagree. I prefer the standard 75 watt speakers in my 1960 cab to the vintage 30's in my freinds 1960 cab.
