Blog » AFD100 in America: The Long Wait is Finally Over
To all our friends and fellow-Slash-fanatics, 'across the pond' in America, we've been reading the blogs and the postings and we've been feeling both your frustration and pain! There's no worse torture than anxiously waiting to plug into an AFD100 while reading ecstatic “I’ve got mine, it rules” reports from folk in the UK and Europe, yet knowing that there aren’t any in America yet. Why this seemingly criminal and grossly unfair distribution of the amp?
In a word (or two) it all boils down to a term that’s the bane of all law abiding manufacturers of electronic goods – safety certification. And, when it comes to something like an all-valve guitar amp, those rules can be a burden. And some of the most stringent (to use a nice, polite descriptive word) lurk in the U.S. of A.
Unfortunately, while the first batches of AFD100 met the rest of the world’s regulations with flying colors, more work was needed to meet U.S. requirements. So, while we were shipping to the rest of the world, our crack engineering and approvals staff were working on getting the AFD100 ready for the American market without affecting tone or performance in any way.
Not an easy or quick task, but with diligence and tenacity the deed was done and approved. As a result, AFD100s for America are now in production and the boat carrying the first shipment is about to dock in the USA!
While we appreciate that this delay has been incredibly frustrating, we appreciate your patience and promise you that the wait will be well worth it! In the meantime, please stay tuned to this blog for more Slash related news…’cos a slew of it will be heading your way in the upcoming months!

Posted 1 year ago by StuartC So looks like the problems with America's safety certification has held up the whole production, not just the USA amps.

Posted 1 year ago by cpubound Thanks for the update. I hope mine is on that boat. :) Any interesting modifications that had to be made? Or was it just technical stuff that we really don't care about? BOTTOM LINE: Did Slash try out a USA amp? Does he say there is no difference in the sound?

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @StuartC, not at all. Production for the rest of the world amps hasn't been stopped. Still building and shipping 1800amps needs some time...
@cpubound, Slash has always played US amps. The changes mostly paperworks and some mains parts. Nothing at all to do with the sound.

Posted 1 year ago by JUJAMAKILL Great news, and to think i was just about to give up looking at this forum. So, umm.. if u made the modifications to Slash's amps so he could use em legally, why werent the amps destined for USA given the same mods straight away? Also, no mention of the Aussie amps, are we to wait after the USA batch and subsequent hold ups? Shoulda punched ours out first :)

Can you please please please, ship Number 1 collectors edition afd100 to Australia, that will be much appreciated, thanx. StuartC, I hope that you are wrong because I'm no math whiz but 500 amps at 10 per week would have some people looking under their Christmas trees hoping theirs shows up.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by matsandersson I find it very hard to believe that Marshall only ship 10 amps per week. That would make aprox 520 amps in a year. Then it would take more than 4 years to ship all 2300 amps.

Posted 1 year ago by petersheer I'm alot more concerned about some amps going back for repairs already than when I am going to get it. The video by STOOF is disturbing, I know a few others who bought it also had issues and needed the amp to be returned. This thing is starting to look like a dud, for this kind of money script wiping off a faceplate is unacceptable, so is the problem in STOOFs video.

looks even better in real. The black tolex on mine (and probably on all) has some kind of greenish hue which makes it look like a fucking piece of art.

Posted 1 year ago by brotor Q: I have a 1960BV cab. And i want to use two heads in mono on that cab (not simultaniously but switching between heads). Can i set the cab to mono and use the 16ohm input for one head and the 4 ohm input for the other, or will this make complications regarding to the load on the heads?
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman just don't do it, it might be the last thing you've done in your life..
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by JHall55 @ Brotor - If you want to run two heads, you need to run your cab in stereo, using an 8 ohm head in each channel. I'm planning on using an Orange Tiny Terror for cleans and the AFD as my gain/lead using that setup.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by brotor @JHall55 - I know i can run them in stereo, but one of the heads are a vintage modern an thi only has 4 and 16ohm outputs. Thought that if I never ran the heads simultaneously but switched between them that i could have the VM hooked to the 4ohm mono and the AFD to the 16 ohm, but this doesn't work???
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by spikke no it will not work, and you will damage the amp which is connected to the second input.
and if you run the cab in mono mode, the second input is dead, how do you whant to switch between amps?
you need the radial headbone or the palmer triline with the e-frog
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by fortress @ gunsandmarshalls I'm from Baie-Comeau (Québec) ;) didnt got mine but i did pre ordered one from USA.. Still waiting playing my Vintage Modern
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by fortress @ brotor you can run your cab in stereo, put your Vintage modern in 4ohm and plug it in the 8ohm input. THe problem arise when you choose an output impedance higher than the input impedance. (Ex: output amp 16ohm, input of the cab 8ohm) .
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by fortress @ brotor Your second solution, is to buy an head switcher made to use 2 heads on 1 cab but that cost 300$.. Anyway turst, me, you can put your VM at 4ohm and plug it in the 8ohm input

Posted 1 year ago by HiredGun To those of you who have already received your amp... I can hear the amazing sound quality in this amp, but my biggest question is about the power control. There is a lot of hype surrounding this new addition, but is it really that good? In my experience even some of the best power attenuators change the sound somewhat... How about this one?

Posted 1 year ago by v3rock So you dudes that own the original JCM Slash and the AFD already, how do you compare the two ?
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by HiredGun @Matnic: I would expect that it is normal... According to the handbook, the amp goes from 100 to 50 from 5:00 to 3:00 (a very narrow range) and at 12:00 you're running 12 watts. So from 7:00 to 12:00 there's only 12 watts difference. I don't think there will be that much difference in volume in this range. I wouldn't worry.

Posted 1 year ago by slasher Got mine in Australia last night. Ordered it from soundsgreatmusic.com in the UK. First impressions is this amp sounds very different from my JCM900 (4100 with modded EL34's).
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by slasher The AFD lacks depth in the tone (after 2hrs of messing with EQ) I still couldnt dial in my sound. Playing rythem it sounds great, kills the JCM, but solos are not there yet. Not impressed thus far. Give it a week or so and it could be up for sale if I cant dial it in.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by slasher @Matrric. Mine is the same. It seems to be very rough harsh jumps in volume using the power scaling.
Ps. The amp sounds shit unless you have power on 100, and master on about 6. That's when it starts to shine. I think I may try and bias the valves a little hotter and see if that helps.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by slasher Santiago, any advice for getting more depth in the tone from this amp when playing higher than the 5th frett would be good. My Les Paul has orginal black beauty caps in it and sounds awesome through JMPs & JCM900. It sounds a little thin through the AFD. :-(
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by slasher It seems where my JCM900 lacks, the AFD has the goods, but where the AFD lacks the JCM900 has the goods. How do I get the best of both into 1 amp?
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by slasher @ backslash Yeah I also run a mesa triaxis for heavier stuff. if you plug straight into the effects return jack, it bypasses the preamp. works for both high & low inputs. It's quite convenient too, before I had to plug unplug the bloody lead, now its a simple flick of the switch.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by slasher @ HiredGun, once you back the power attenuator off say 1 spot, eg. 10 down to 9 (10 being 100w) it changes the sound and your highs sound thinner and shitter than before. Sure it's good to have and allows you to have a reasonable sound at acceptable levels when playing late at night, but during the day its got to be on full!

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR @ All - Guys, this might sound stupid because all you more experienced guys will have probably guessed this already . . . but most people who have got this amp will have bought a 1960av/bv cab or one with v30's in . . . I think that is the reason people aren't as satisfied as what they expected to be . . .
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR To get the best tone out of this amp, the same cabs used on appetite and the Latter GNR stuff (uyi1 &2) would probably give people a better slash tone. the v30 give the sound a slightly warmer, more melodic bluesy sound. They give the afd sound a close comparison but the #34 lacks the crisp and trebly edge of what we hear on the record . . .

The sound samples on youtube and a quick test i did at a local shop combined with high price and the quality issues made me feel that the amp isnt worth waiting for.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by jonnyhturbo well, the only real way to know if its AFD tone is if Slash hisself says it is. And with what Slash has been through in life, i dont hink he is one to lie about his life's work. We already know what he said about the AFD100.
Thus we have the base line to compare. Are you saying Slash is a sellout? or true to his "Guns?"
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by matsandersson Remember they used only the (i guess unmixed) guitar tracks from the album. You can never compare an album sound with your own sound. The tones you hear on albums has been mixed and tweaked and the actual sound from the amp in the studio can sound way different than it does on the record.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by Schecko look what Slash just posted on twitter : "After all these years, I've come to the conclusion: 80% of your sound is u, not your gear. For better or worse. I don't play guns stuff in my band, but I like the feeling and the response of the amp. Everyone has decide for himself.

Sounds nothing like AFD. Youre missing that "human" tone. AFD has a bit of warmth throughout. AFD sounds like emotion. From a woman crying, to a grouchy old man, to the yelling of a champion. Glad youre going to get the real AFD. let us know how they compare when you do.

Posted 1 year ago by marktestroote Just got home from my band rehearsal. Used the AFD on a battered and abused JCM 800 era 1960B cabinet. Did not find my own sweet tones yet, think I have to fiddle around with it for another while. Usually I have a JCM 900 SL-X and it sounds great on that specific cab. Played last night with the band and the amp is Hot ! It's very loud amp. It's right there with my Diamond Phantom and Mojave Peacemaker. My only complaint so far is the following. It is a one channel amp, so when you finish playing and turn down by guitar or volume pedal, there is somewhat of a hum, but I need to double check my speaker cables.

I wish the foot pedal had a better quality wire/cable, I can tell that will wear out soon. I also wish Marshall would provide a better quality power cable, like the Monster Power Cables that come with a Diamond Amp.

Posted 1 year ago by goldtopLP Just a littly FYI on speakers, for those of you who are trying to achieve the "AFD" sound on the AFD100, if you paid attention to the video's, they were trying to, and achieving the AFD tone with the vintage 30's, because that's what Slash wanted. That's what they done all of their spec's on this amp to, was the Vintage 30's. So that is your best bet with getting that tone on the AFD100.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by goldtopLP It doesn't really matter what speaker was used on the AFD album, if you are playing through an AFD100, because it was made to get that tone with the Vintage 30's.

Posted 1 year ago by marktestroote Anyone found their favorite bias current setting yet? Around 45 mA with the 6550's? Or even hotter?
PS: I tried a set of EL34's yesterday but did not hear a lot of difference to the tone (but I wasn't able to play loud).
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by matsandersson According to Santiago the AFD should get a less mid scooped tone with more midrange with EL34´s. I will test EL34´s in my AFD later on since it´s my favourite valve in a Marshall amp.

Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert I thought you did not have to touch the bias on the back. I just do the auto bias procedure. Is this not good enough? Mine came at 30. Should I turn it up? The hotter the bias, what does it do to the sound? If too hot will it damage amp?
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert I think the power control works great. After playing at home all week under 30 watts, I finally got to go jam at my friends house. I played night train with the master and power all the way up through a 1960bv. I later turned the master to 7 and power at 3 o'clock. Best guitar sound I ever heard.

Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert Really digging the #34 mode for soloing on songs like walk this way, and communication breakdown. For a crunch amp, it really can do a lot. Non of the issues are Marshall inhouse products. :(
BIAS problem and the volume problem and the face plate issue are all supplier issues. But non of the problems have been solved. December amps have same issues as march amps. :(

Marshall have had a bucnh of returs.
Some amps have been back 2-3 times at different dealers and now at the head office. 4 weeks and still not solved according to this guy.

Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert I have not had any problems with my amp. All the lettering is on, no volume problems. I actually think the amp is not too loud all the way up. It doesn't make my ears ring like my old practice amp which is only 30watts.

Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert It is really awful that some people paid in full back in August, got their amp just to find out it is broke and they need to keep sending it back. what a nightmare, these people need compensated for their huge loss. Do you guys have bailouts in England? Just kidding - it is only 1% that have defects.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert i love the #34 mode, it sounds like the original marshall LP sound. you can get old classic rock sounds up to acdc sound. I do not really hear the use your illusion resemblance yet - but I will keep working on the settings. I would not call the sound thin. It has way less mid than the AFD though!
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert still the best amp I have owned, and do not want to play with any other amp. If my afd breaks, I will look into the vintage modern, or mesa boogie amps (even though they sound agressive).
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by riden21 @cjeippert haha dont say mesa boogie on here, it's a marshall blog ;)
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by Fredrik @cjeippert
Why do you say its just 1%?
Marshall have not claimed that 1% is broken.
And they have not even built 2300 amps.
So right if you count the open forum amps and the local dealers that have issues vs estimated delivery its much more then 1% that have some kind of issue.
Btw if you dont want to wait for your amp www.blocket.se got 3 AFD100 for sale.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by jak0lantern01 Uh, 1% may actually be a high estimate, especially if you consider that the posts on various message boards were mostly the same few folks running from board to board with their complaints. Sure, it sounded like a big issue, but it seems to be a lot smaller than the negative hype that's been generated by a few individuals. Everyone is just so emotional about this amp.

For those who don't know, it comes with: Owners Manual, Certificate of autenticity, t-shirt, footswith, dust cover and speaker cable.
I ordered mine at MusicStore (European online store) in August and only received it now. Mine was produced in 02.03.2011.

Posted 1 year ago by Marker 1st thoughts: well built and good looking!
Overall sound: the amp is calibrated on the treble side, like the Slash tone of the AFD record.
#34 mode: sounds like a wah pedal turned on, stationary on the treble side. Very very trebly, this was a disapointement so far.
AFD mode: Perfect. It nails every AFD record tone. Has more bass and gain than the #34 mode, it's the perfect tone for me.

Posted 1 year ago by izzy_stradlin Afd owners, have you found any settings that you like most?
From the few hours i tried mine i like in the afd mode the following settings.
Presence 8,Bass 5,Middle 6,Treble 7-8,Master 6,Gain 8-9
Thats for slash tone,if i want more classic rock tone i lower the presence and treble.

Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert my first impression of the 34 was also a wah sound. After playing it on medium volumes for a half an hour. I turned it off and on with the auto biasing and it went away.

Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert My first impression of the AFD sound was a lack of treble with vintage 30 speakers. It sounded like a lot of mid, so I turned up the prescence and treble, and it sounds more like the AFD album.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert We should all try to get the settings to match what our ears think matches the afd record and share. It would be fun. I know that this is probably impossible because of acoustics of room, straight versus angle cab, different speakers, etc.... and do it for the #34 uyi sound
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by cjeippert Is the #34 really the sound on UYI? I always thought slash used the silver jubilee for that album. Was the silver jubilee modded to #34? I thought the #34 mod was for JCM 800. Very confusing trying to match someone else's RECORDED sound.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by matsandersson If you think #34 sounds like a wah wah on pressed all the way down you´ve never tried that. That sounds plain awful and willl kill your ears. It´s more like using a treble booster or boosting high frequenzies on a graphic EQ. It´s actually a really great sound if you learn to tame it:-)

"...during the recording of the UYI albums, Slash switched to an old JCM 800 with 6550 output tubes...

Jupiter 89-- Thank you very much for the nice words. You will see a date on the Certificate that all the techs that built your signed. Your amp will be fine. I think some of the people with problems are rookies and are confused on how the power travels and affects the amp.

Posted 1 year ago by HiredGun @ Richie: You're right, I also read that sometime ago. I also read that he blended two amps together for the UYI albums, whereas he only used one amp for his dirty sound on AFD. This could be why so many people are having a difficult time hearing the UYI tone in this amp...
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by HiredGun Seems like I also remember reading somewhere that for the clean sound on AFD he used some 150-watt amp... can't remember the brand though...
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by goldtopLP The tone you here on a recording is not really what the amp itself will sound like live. When the guitar parts are recorded, they are mixed to fit in with the song. So what you hear on UYI is not really how #34 sounds. Then you have to take in account for room size, room temp, mics, cables, picks used, ect.. all of these things affect the tone before it is mixed.
0 Report
Posted 1 year ago by goldtopLP If you remeber, for the AFD mode, they used the original tracks of AFD as a model for this amp. I think they just used #34 itself, for the #34 mode. But with tweaking and maybe some pedals (i.e. compressor, EQ, ect..), you should be able to get pretty darn close to the UYI tone on #34, it's there, after all it is made from the #34,but the tone you hear on UYI is a mix for the record.

Posted 1 year ago by Helwig Issues with my AFD 100:
1. The amp is microphnic. It squeals at higher gain- and master-settings.
2. The lettering on the back- and front-panels comes off if you touch it.
The trouble is: If I send my AFD 100 back for repair I'll end up being "ampless"!!!
Thus, I WOULD LIKE MY AFD 100 TO BE REPLACED BY THE FACTORY ASAP!
