Blog » Panel Cosmetics

The next step in this exciting project is to start looking at cosmetics, mainly how the front panel is going to look. After a few discussions with Slash, he decided he wanted to keep the general feel of the amp as classic Marshall as possible, but with a slight edge! He had mentioned previously that he would like a brushed silver panel so that gave us a great platform to work from. With the addition of silver Marshall knobs and vintage toggle switches, this panel has all the makings of a quintessential Marshall. It wouldn't be a true Slash signature though without the inclusion of his signature skull and crossbones graphic along with a hint of snake skin coming in from the right.

As we've mentioned in previous blogs, the features have been kept relatively simple, allowing it be a real 'plug in and play' amplifier. We're still working on the finer details of the unit aesthetics but will keep you posted with each decision that's made.

Posted 1 year ago by jonthebass @ Satiago - Can you confirm if this amp is to be a limited release or a new production model please? I know there's been talk but just wondered if anything's been firmed up.
Onto business - That front panel looks really cool. The Power control and #34/AFD switch features are just brilliant. Well done Guys.

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura That's just AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Very, very nice work!!!! The most awesome panel!!!
@Santiago, what do you think about including a cover all in black only with the Slash logo in Silver or gold, or maybe the Appetite for Destruction logo in Silver or Gold?
Cheers!

RicMoura

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura @Santiago, or maybe the "SLASH AFD100 Signature Amplifier", just like it is on the front panel (in silver or gold)...
It would be cool in a all black cover

Report

AmnesicAphasia

Posted 1 year ago by AmnesicAphasia Shouldn't it be #39 ???
For what is the Power Poti?
What can you do with the FXloop Switch?
And again, shouldn't it be #39, I think it's the settings from the S.I.R. #39, maybe the most famous amp on this planet ;o).

Xenious

Posted 1 year ago by Xenious Oh yea. That is a very very good look. As above I'm curious about the power knob. It would be cool if it could attenuate between 100w and 50w.

Posted 1 year ago by Miclev Perfect ! It's just perfect ! Slash has always been a good drawer, a good graphic artist. His artistic sensibility for design seems to be as good as for guitar riffs and solo… This panel is really fine ! Great job, Santiago, once again. Keep going on this way.

Marker

Posted 1 year ago by Marker Looks great, very clean | The signature skull is cool but I could live whitout it,as if it was a regular Marshall. The power knob is variable wattage, I think.

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @ jonthebass, my last info is that it will be limited run but the amount will be high enough to cover the demand. It won't be a silly small number.
@ fernantonio, we don't have price yet but it will be something reasonable, in the line of other UK made amplifiers
@RicMoura, there will be a cover included...

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @stoof, it is a variable output power. In our current design from 100W to a fraction of a watt. Inputs I and II are high/low and can be used to daisy chain amps.
@AmnesicAphasia, we preferred calling it AFD so it is clear what is does. The amp has en effects loop that can be switched in and out with the FX loop control.

Posted 1 year ago by jimmyk Whats that little switch saying #34/afd do?
If it switches tones, what tones are we talking here?
The amplifier is looking great, thanks Santiago!

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @ Rich_G, never say never but at this very moment there is no plan for a 100W multichannel amp...
@Miclev, we are very glad you like it. In this case lets pass the credits to Jeeni, she is the responsible for the panel design :-)

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @jimmyk, the #34 is the amp that Slass was using from Use Your Illusion onwards, including his solo album. The AFD is the Appetite for Destruction tone.

adrien

Posted 1 year ago by adrien Hi Santiago! I know most people don't care about this, but to me this is crucial to whether I'm going to buy this amp or not: can you get a good clean tone out of it? Be it by rolling off the guitar volume knob or pluging into the low input... By 'good clean tone' I mean a good Marshall type of clean, like on a old Plexi, JMP, or on my beloved JCM Slash 2555SL. Keep up the good work guys!

Look forward to hearing the amp!

jenni.taylor-bickers

Posted 1 year ago by jenni.taylor-bickers Thank you for all the great comments on the panel, we're all really pleased that it has been so well received by everyone, including Slash!

@Miclev - Slash really liked the design for the panel and logo and made no major changes to the original concept at all! He pretty much left the overall design up to us, just stating that he wanted a sliver panel.

Report

jenni.taylor-bickers

Posted 1 year ago by jenni.taylor-bickers @RicMoura - Thanks for the great compliment!

@jetmarshall - The snake skin is only meant to be a subtle hint which we feel works quite well. Of course, if Slash wants it to look slightly stronger we would willing oblige. I too though can't wait to see and hear the completed amp in action!

It's hard to wait, but it's very intersting to follow all the development step by step. Sure it'll make a stronger relationship with this amp and music when we wil play it. Thanks to all the staff for your work and to share it with us. How many people work on this project ?

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @adrien, the amp cleans up quite nicely with the guitar volume. You won't be disappointed.
@radbowl, Slash uses vintage 30 speakers normally but you can use any cabinet that suits you. The cabinet that Slash was using was a 1960BV

PuroMojo

Posted 1 year ago by PuroMojo @ Santiago. Is the power pot is going to work like a power attenuator affecting output dB or is it just a power variation that will varies power section influence on tone? I'm asking that in comparison to recent Egnater amp models that have that type of pot. They don't really change "volume output" but power section tone from spongy (lower watt) to more crunch wide tone (higher wattage).

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @PuroMojo, the power pot changes the total output power with minimal tone change. That allows the player to get power amp distortion at low volume. You can crank the master and overdrive the power amplifier at low listening levels.

Report

PuroMojo

Posted 1 year ago by PuroMojo @Santiago. Thanks for your reply. So it will have the same function of a power attenuator. A "built-in power attenuator" actually. This is a really cool idea and useful if one wants to use a lower wattage speaker cabinet. And you don't need always to plug a 200w cab on it ;)!

Rowbi

Posted 1 year ago by Rowbi @buzzdee: I think someone has hinted on a snakes skin tolex. I imagine it'll either be that or just black. I'm hoping for black, as it just wound't look simple enough (which is what Slash wanted) if it wasn't black. the silver panel is different enough for me

jignow

Posted 1 year ago by jignow I agree completely - black tolex please. Anything beyond the silver faceplate and slash signature is too gaudy in my humble opinion.

@Santiago - Bravo, Kudos, and Excellent work!! I simply cannot wait to get one of these. Looks & sounds superb and I'm anxious to know what pricing might be - and release dates - as quickly as possible! Thanks!

AmnesicAphasia

Posted 1 year ago by AmnesicAphasia This will be a Slash Signature Amp, so I think Slash is the only one who should make a decision what color the tolex should have and what other things the amp sould have or should not have. And I'm sure, we all will love, at least so many that all amps will be sold. ;o)

Report

AmnesicAphasia

They have done a great amp !

Report

farhaan83

Posted 1 year ago by farhaan83 @ Miclev, supposedly the special edition would be hand wired with a potential boost for leads and the regular production model won't have this and will be on a PCB instead of being hand wired.
Hopefully Santiago can correct me on this. But no details till it's finalised ay ;)

andre

Posted 1 year ago by andre I love the simplicity of the front panel...just have a suggestion for the order of the controls. How about: Power-Master-Gain-Bass-Middle-Treble-Presence,
and stack the FX loop and #34/AFD toggles vertically right next to Slash's logo. So far it has everything I want. Really looking forward to its release!!!! Cheers!

Posted 1 year ago by beniiiii My own design will be a black metal brushed front panel. The colour should be not only black but black with violin reflects.
Golden knobs so with the gold metal cap and black western tolex.
This will be a really nice Marshall.

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago Hi, there will be 2 versions of AFD100 as talked from the very begining. Further details will be disclosed soon but features and construction will be the same.
