I love the #34 mod, that's what I bought this amp for. The AFD tone is good, but the #34/Illusions era tone is the best I've ever heard, I'm really happy I'll be able to reproduce it myself!!

Minimal hum, feedback is easily manipulated, the power function is inspired and if you back off the volume on your guitar you get a decent clean tone. Massive thank you to Santiago and Marshall; the Slash tone is there but Megadeth, Jimi, AC/DC - all easily accessible

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @gunsandmarshalls, principles are the similar. Both our system and Kevin's are based in some previous works to which Kevin added a HT control that we didn't implement. On the other hand, apart from the input signal we compensate the power amp feedback and we added the biasing to the system.

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @seb360, we'll need to wait after the Christmas bread to give you an answer. My colleagues are still working on the details as far as I know :)
@voodoo.child, what I personally would do is keep the master and gain on your sweet spot and control the overall volume with the power control, then fine tune the tone.

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @SlaashGNR, I'd not do it if possible as stacking heads is not stable. If you have 2 cabinets then place one amp on each cabinet, which also have trays for the head feet.
You can adjust the wah by moving the relative position of the rack and pinion. Probably some explanation in Google ;-)

Posted 1 year ago by brotor #36 was an SLP with a similar mod as #39 ( a super tremolo) had. They made #36 because #39 was so sought out for. Slash used #39 for the rehersals, but this was rented out when time came for the recordings. so he got #36 instead. A totally similar amp, but with slight different cosmetics, as this one was a modded SLP and #39 was a Super Tremolo. the circuitry was identical.

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman @mtlmike, have you considered going without a speaker ? I rarely use my 4x12 Cabs, and when I do I switch them to stereo and only use one side (2x12) at home. Not much of a difference but all my amps are set to 8ohm, so switching makes it easier. The AFD100 has a Powercontrol that lets you run the amp down to 0.1watts.. that should do for either.. 2x12 as well as 4x12.

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman @mtlmike, back to the "without speaker" approach.
I use a Palmer PDI03 loadbox/speakersimulation with my Marshalls..
I can run directly into the FOH or into my audiointerface->headphones.. or my active monitors..
reduces a lot of weight to carry around when using them live, and I can run them at any volume. A bit pricey, but for me the best alternative.

The consistent fault across all valves, even good ones, was V1.

Sounds likes a problem with the biasing or power supply to V1 :0(

Mr.MiteyMites

Posted 1 year ago by Mr.MiteyMites @patience b) UYI was recorded using modded jcm 800, #34 so yes UYI tones in #34 mode is my understanding after reading this. c) reason gain seems lower is because Slash cranked master volume during those recordings. He later did a blend between #34 and Silver Jubilees at 50watts. This according to Adam Day his old guitar tech.

a) => No. Tim has his own brand, Caswell Amps.
b) => this is #34
c) => #36 (afd) has another gain stage.
on UYI, slash used to crank the master volume to 8, preamp on 3 on #34.
AFD has more gain, but UYI sound is more "overproduced"
d) => a Moded JCM 800, called #34. The one Santiago has analysed to replicate it on the AFD Amp.
e) => Low Input and Hight Input.

Posted 1 year ago by bondy1978 So Marshall are rolling this out as an exclusive at NAMM in the U.S even though there's a ton of reviews and video footage of it all over the net???? I have one sitting in my spare bedroom FFS!!! Really feel sorry for you guys in the U.S and you are right - it's a complete pisstake.

Posted 1 year ago by bondy1978 These amps are working out more expensive in the U.S than they are in the UK. It may be worth seeing how cheap you can get a flight over here and taking one back as hand luggage. You'd have to use a step up transformer with it but the shops are full of them over here

patience

Posted 1 year ago by patience Hey,
I know that Marshall's new offering the AFD-100 comes with new features like auto biasing and power scaling. AFD-100 uses 6550s and tries to cover two modes #34 and AFD.
But also, Marshall's last slash signature head JCM2555SL (based on silver jubilee) was something people covet.

Posted 1 year ago by patience Could someone help me understand:
a) In terms of tonality, what is the difference between AFD-100 and JCM2555SL? Which is smoother, gainier, more ballsy, better?
b) I know Slash used #39/#36 for the AFD.

patience

Posted 1 year ago by patience c) When was the JCM2555SL used by Slash?
d) Which will have a better value in time to come? I have options to pick up a used 2555SL, or buy a brand new AFD-100. What would you recommend?

Posted 1 year ago by angusyoung @roddy - chill out. The delivery dates were always estimates and if you sold your gear with gigs coming up based on an 'estimate' then more fool you for not having a backup plan

@patience - all the info you're asking for is in this website if you take the time to read everything. There is no "better" tone just different, and only you can choose what amp suits you best.

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman @patience. both are 1-channel amps, which make them not very flexible. the "silver jubilee", as well as the reissue "2555SL" are usually good investments. In terms of sound I'd say, that's what a Rockguitar should sound like when you play through an overdriven 2550/2555SL. It can't get much better. One of the few amps that you play dry!

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman The AFD has a modded "2203" circuit.
I have an original "JMP2203" which is playing in the same league as the jubilee. It has a "roaring" sound,.. and the louder you play it the better it gets. So I assume that the mod on the AFD gives you the possibility to run it at lower volumes with more gain(besides having the power control on the AFD)

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman Hard to decide which of the 2 you should get..
The "better value" has the silver jubilee.. but some people think different, cause the 2555SL is not as old and you don't have to worry about maintenance as much... but then it's a signature amp, which is a bit "special" (not nec. in a positive way)
The AFD has yet to show how special and valuable it will be.

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR I have tweaked about with it and they are all close to 6 but im more accurate in saying they're between 5 and 7. I achieved the closest sound with this. Also it's on less than half way with the power control.

Why did you play Izzy´s part?

Btw if you have the USA AFD you need to change the caps to 015/022 and put some 50s wiring and 600k pots.

Have no clue why Gibson put incorrect wiring in their AFD USA model when we all know Derrig version have the spec above.

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman @slaash, is the afd that noisy? I've noticed it before on the official AFD video.. no wonder that slash uses a hum eliminator in his rig.. probably a bit too hot modded...
the recording is quite ok considering that you used a mobile to record it.

Posted 1 year ago by brickford i found it can pick up noise easily and a noise gate did reduce it but i have since sold mine , the hype may have gotten a head of its self , but each to their own.

roddy

Posted 1 year ago by roddy @brickford, please do tell more about the noise you were getting with the afd? Was it power noise, feedback, white noise??? Why did you sell? So soon!?!?! Jubilee is much better????

Report

brickford

Posted 1 year ago by brickford Well i didn't sell it on the basis of noise etc it was just not working with me and if after 4 days it still doesn't work with you it never will. I will say tonally its fairly good but i think overall marshall could have done the trilogy of preamps : #34 #36 2555sl with seperate controls then it would have been a very good amp.

Posted 1 year ago by billybafd I will wait for the AFD Amp............ but I have come to a conclusion. I used Traynors way back when I was young and always liked the sound. So to me this is a lesson learned. This will be my last Marshall amp I ever buy. I was going to order a JVM410 also, but I am now looking into a Traynor, Sorry Marshall, I am not into games and waiting over 8 months for something I paid up front for.

Hi,
I understand that for the UYI tour (around 1991 I think), Slash used the Jubilee (with KT88s) along with a Boss GE7 to get the smooth creamy lead tone.
I love the tone on UYI records, MORE than the AFD tones.
1. Does the #34 mode on the AFD100 achieves these tones?
2. Aren't the AFD-100 and Jubilee supposed to be different animals?

Report

patience

Posted 1 year ago by patience @Santiago (contd..)
3. What exactly are the tonal differences between a Jubilee and AFD-100?
4. Which has better UYI tones?

Sorry if this has been asked before. It would help me decide between the AFD-100 or the Jubilee 2555.
I know, getting one of these will NOT make me Slash! BUT I still want to get the as close to it as I possibly can.
Cheerio.
