Marshall AFD100

Blog » Ready for the belts to roll!

The AFD100 project is in full flow and while units are undergoing safety and EMC external certifications and we are dealing with the latest video issues, our Purchasing Dept. has been busy stocking up on materials ready for when the belts start rolling. So far we have 3.6 metric tonnes of mains and output transformers, 1.35 square kilometres of Russian birch ply siting at the wood shop door, 120 sheets of mild steel ready to be bent into AFD100 chassis in the metal shop, 2.4 kilometres of black levant vinyl cut and ready to wrap on cabs and 2400 6550 power valves and 3000 ECC83 pre-amp valves being graded. There are currently 100 PCB panels going through auto insertion ready for flow solder and ATE testing and components have been ordered and scheduled to drop into production as required.

Our standard factory lead time is 4-6 weeks and we have scheduled approximately 24 weeks to fulfill all orders currently on the system. We are confident that all major distributors will have stock before the Christmas holiday period, with production ramping up substantially during December and in to the New Year.

We will be catching up with Slash this week at the Classic Rock Awards in London, where we will hopefully get a chance to discuss the specification and finish for the Special Collectors Edition units.

Posted 1 year ago by surfnorthwest Even if the production line started today a 4-6 week lead time puts the first amps at the earliest here in the US sometime the week of December 13. Even then there will be very limited inventory.

I guess a few could get one before Christmas but that is pushing it. Have my heart set to have one under the tree but if not I have other Marshall's I love.

The registry section is not up just yet, but to submit an entry or even view the registry, you would need to register at the forum.
That's all I've got for now. Thanks!

Posted 1 year ago by RicMoura If that's the case, It doesn't seem right. That bad. Hope I didn't understod it well.
UK, Germany, US will get this amp before the rest of the world, just because they have bigger distributors. Not fair. At least for all Europe it should be equal. Distance reasons.

Report

thenoodler

Posted 1 year ago by thenoodler They will do what makes the most sense from a business point of view, not based on who put the deposit down first. Marshall has no idea what the "batting order" is, they just take pre-orders from retailers before retailers take them from us. The stores that made a commitment early on will likely get thiers first.

Report

thenoodler

Posted 1 year ago by thenoodler When I called my retailer (big chain) to pre-order it was prior to any of the small stores announcing they were accepting pre-orders, and the contact I have inside told me the amps were already in their computer system and commitments made to Marshall to buy them. So the big chains stores have known about this amp longer than we have.

Report

billybafd

Posted 1 year ago by billybafd Well I waited four and half months for a Les Paul 1959 re-issue, so far I have been waiting two months for this amp. But I am starting to understand why my contacts are starting to hide on me when I walk into the store.............. Playing it out for the season when people are most willing to pay the most for anything they most desire. Good idea, great marketing strategy, don't you think?

Report

angusyoung

Posted 1 year ago by angusyoung Marshall will ship orders in batches. They're not going to send 100 amps to 100 shops in 100 countries. The distribution costs would be crazy! I would guess the bigger markets (US, UK etc) will get the majority of the first few production runs. That makes business sense :0)

Another option to the Palmer is the Radial JDX Box. All three of my 100watt heads has one for direct recording. Absolutly great. Goes between your head and cabinet then XLR to your mixer or A/D converter. Works different then the Palmer. Little to no color of tone. I sold my Royer when I discovered these.

acidrain1993

Posted 1 year ago by acidrain1993 @jonthebass another option you might consider, which IMHO is much better than a speaker "sim" is to plug the head into a hotplate (using it purely as a load) and the line out from the hotplate going into your DAW, then into a cab impulse. It might sound complicated, but its not and it will give you a much more REAL sound IMO. Give it a try :)

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman The Palmer PDI03 acts as a loadbox without a speaker connected. You can then use either the speaker-sim-out or/and one of the line-outs for further processing. (like using your own speaker-impulses)
Notice, when you connect a speaker to the Palmer, the loadbox-part is deactivated!

Posted 1 year ago by jonthebass Onto the Roland SRV-2000 Reverb unit - Does anyone know what the actual settings that were used by Mike Clink?
I'm still not convinced that old digital reverb does anything a modern unit or plugin will do.

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman the SRV-2000 was part of the post-production. The #39 did not have an effect-loop, and the SRV-2000 was probably financially attractive only to studios/producers. Capturing "that" sound also implies that you would have to get an analog tape machine and that mixing-console with their distinctive preamps.

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman If someone is very lucky, and still has the original tapes from the AFD production, then chances are good that there's a tech-sheet included with all the diff. settings, as for the lack of automation they had to write everything down to reproduce the mix.. but I'm not 100% sure how they worked in that certain studio.

Report

jonthebass

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR I don't see how different bits of reverb do different things when all pedals can be set at a different level . . .I think that at the end of the day reverb is reverb . . . just different amounts produce different distant/closer sounds. please correct me if I'm wrong because it's just a personal opinion. . .

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR just wondering though . . . if I would actually be able to achieve the same sounding reverb from a Boss digital reverb as I would with the Roland SRV - 2000? with much less messing about setting up using less space? Can somebody please assure me on this. Thanks

Report

Franktheman

Posted 1 year ago by Franktheman reverb != reverb
@slaashGNR, you probably won't hear the difference !
there are just too many parameters involved to explain the difference here in detail..
almost "any" reverb will do for a guitar. You might be more demanding on a good reverb when you record the guitar then you would just playing live.

Posted 1 year ago by brickford Can anyone tell me what's to stop anyone copying the gain structure mods in this amp? the last thing i want to do is buy a amp that others can copy on to their own jcm 800's thus devaluing this amp. its a choice of waiting for some one to rip the schamatics and then mod my jcm 800 to the same schamtics or buy this.

Report

SixxstringKing

Posted 1 year ago by SixxstringKing What? the mod that this amp is based on to begin with? This mod has been around almost as long as the JCM800. You could buy the JCM800 and have the Caswell mod done and sound like the AFD100 only it will end up costing you more in the long run and won't look like the AFD100. There is the power knob that makes this amp unique and would set it apart from a modded JCM800!

Report

jonthebass

Posted 1 year ago by jonthebass @brickford - Exactly what SSK says is true. I looked into getting an amp modded a few years ago and it does end up an expensive mission. Why bother when this amp is about to be released and will do it all and them some with the auto-bias function as well as the Power control.

StuartC

Posted 1 year ago by StuartC @SlaashGNR I use a 12AT7 valve (instead of a 12AX7) in the Phase Inverter position in my clean JCM2555 (as Slash does), but then when used as a dirty amp it sounded the closest to the AFD sound I have ever managed .

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR @StuartC - Are you telling me that the valves that come with the jcm SLASH 2555sl are not the valves that Slash uses in his? Does the 12AT7 make the dirty sound more like afd? Or is that just strictly for the clean channel? . . . I think the 2555sl is quite different sounding to afd and #34. It doesn't have the melodic umph and crisp that the others have. It's just a great crunchy amp!

Report

StuartC

Posted 1 year ago by StuartC @SlaashGNR His dirty amp valves are the usual 12AX7 (ecc83) pre-amp and EL34 power amp (as per your 2555SL) but his clean amp uses at least 1 12AT7 in the pre-amp (it's a lower gain valve used in a lot of Fender amps) and KT88's in the power amp.

Report

StuartC

Posted 1 year ago by StuartC @SlaashGNR After reading this info I put an AT7 in the Phase inverter position of my clean 2555(far left as you look at the back) but kept the EL34's. This gave a really nice clean tone, but one day I tried it as my dirty amp and it gave it that JCM800 bite, and an amazing SCOM tone.

I don't care if there's a video or not neither I care if on the video Slash plays copyrighted AFD tunes or any other licks. I just want to have the one I ordered here in my plase asap.

Also, Marshall do yourself a favour and reissue the Jubilee. Many people want it, just check the crazy prices they're sold at Ebay!!

Report

jonthebass

Posted 1 year ago by jonthebass @SlaashGNR - Without a doubt go for the Boss Digi Reverb. I'm going to do the same. Reason? I don't want a great big, old and potentially unreliable studio rack mount unit reverb to have to get involved with every time I want to write, rehearse and gig.

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Also . . . is there a sort of multi effects loop pedal I can purchase? One which I can plug into both the 2555sl and AFD100 at the same time? And then have all of my pedals running from that unit? If there isn't, how would I be able to connect all of my effects pedals to both of the heads for when I'm playing both dirty and clean?

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Finally, you gave me advice for purchasing the correct monster cable, speaker cable for the head to cab, and instrument cable for guitar to cab . . . is there a cable for effects pedals for the effects loop? Like there would be My instrument cable connecting my guitar to the headbone tonebone vt, and then is there an effects cable to connect the vt to both heads?

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Same for all my effects used in the loop?

Report

brotor

Posted 1 year ago by brotor @SlaashGNR - There are other forums for these kinds of questions. I'm starting to agree with the guy that called you a spammer a while ago. All I'm reading about here is your cable's and pedals and loops. Play both amps without pedals man ;) That's basically what Slash does nowadays. His chorus/MXR's etc. Is only for a couple of specific parts on a few songs.

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR I appreciate your input however I'm not going to have the effects on all the time, just on those specific parts, plus I'll definitely need reverb on both the clean and dirty because I'll be playing plenty of old rock numbers. I'm just buying a boost, a delay, a reverb, a chorus and a wah

Posted 1 year ago by jonthebass @SlaashGNR - Quick answers here: Radial Headbone VT all the way. It's defo safe for your needs. FX Loop pedal - Lehle D Loop. FX loop & pedal cables - Same instrument cable that you'll use for guitar to amp.

I don't know if any of you have seen this video, but if the AFD100 can get anywhere close to the tone this guy's mod has achieved, it will be worth the wait.

Report

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 The thing to keep in mind is that this mod is neither the #39 or #34, but the #36. Is it not true that #36 was what was actually used to record AFD becuase #39 wasn't available ???

Report

jupiter89

Posted 1 year ago by jupiter89 #39 and #36 achieved the same tone however:
#39 Marshall 1959T mod by Tim Caswell ( T=tremolo) and the extra tube for tremolo was used for the extra gain. #36 Marshall 1959 mod by Frank Levi had an extra pre-amp tube added for the gain. Two ways of getting that tone !
