Blog » AFD Stage 1 Engineering Complete!

Over the past few weeks we've been concentrating on developing the fully working, cosmetically correct AFD100 prototype after Slash tested the first handmade prototype in both the studio and on tour. Matthew has been busy putting together all the mechanical drawings and Jenni has been finalising panel artworks. Meanwhile Santiago has been concentrating on drawing the schematics, laying out PCB's which were then soldered by hand to ensure all the electronic parts were properly positioned and everything was correct. The remaining parts were collected to complete and test three working prototypes, two of which were given to Slash to have on the road and one for ourselves as a workbench.

An additional task was to program the amplifier control firmware. We haven’t disclosed it yet but this amplifier features an auto-biasing function which works together with the output power control. We’ve been working on it for more than a year now as it may well appear in some other projects, but we have decided to include it in this amplifier as well. The power control allows the user to obtain power amp distortion at volumes as low as 0.1W going to full 100W with the simple twist of a knob. With a trimmer pot located on the rear panel, the player selects the desired biasing current. When triggered by the user, the amplifier performs a complete biasing job by itself. This feature can be seen as having a little man inside the amp rotating the bias pots and measuring the current for us. Lets highlight too that the biasing is not only limited to the full power control but is performed in all the power range ensuring proper operating conditions at every output power setting. For convenience four LEDs on the rear panel show us if there was any biasing failure. Apart from the obvious easier maintenance, mixing output valve types can also be done without any problems, just plug the valves and let the amp bias them. The self biasing feature was praised as a 'gift from Heaven' by Chet, Slash's guitar tech when first introduced. No more need to get the multimeter, open the amp and tweak the trimmers !

Once the prototypes were assembled the moment of truth came. We met Slash with the working amps in Hong Kong on the 29th July before his first show on the current Asian tour. As his first impression was very positive he decided to use them straight away for the show and perform a real test in a live situation with the band. Feedback was quite good and just a small tweak was needed. Slash wanted the amp a little less aggressive, in his own words he simply wanted to make it perfect! Back to the sound room, a couple of valve changes and immediately we followed the tour down to Singapore. As usual Slash tested the amp during sound check and with a smile on his face he said: 'It is really good, I think we got it' plus some other words and praises that would be impolite to write here!

The rest of the story can be told easily quoting his Twitter entries. After Singapore: 'We've been tweaking the AFD amp & I think we finally have it dialled in. Could be one of the best sounding Marshalls ever.'
After Jakarta: 'Btw, used the latest prototype of the AFD Marshall last couple of shows, its ready for production. It really kicks ass!'

If any of you is attending the Asian tour, you will be hearing the 'real' AFD100 as it is now sitting in his rack as his lead tone amplifier. So now that stage 1 and the design is coming to an end, it's time to transfer the design package to Production Engineering, Purchasing and Manufacturing departments to do their work on it. There is still a way to go until having the amplifiers leave the factory but we will keep you updated in the progress.

The photos below show the final working prototype and Slash's current rig that he is now using on tour.

Marshall please do the right thing and and make at least 5000 of these amps. 3000 amps was too little for his 96 jubilee reissue.

Is the front plate a sticker or is it a metal plate mounted on the body that goes into the sleeve?

murky69nz

Posted 1 year ago by murky69nz Whoa....gonna be honest and buck the trend here.....not feeling so enthusiastic any more....I too thought (hoped!) it was going to be a simple solid tone box built to withstand years of abuse? Now we have "amplifier control firmware" to be programmed. Come on guys, the original #39 didn't have amplifier control firmware. Sad to say, but something's starting to smell funny......

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @Bluesburst, no there is no Slash cabinet.
@murky69nz , don't worry about the "firmware", it is just there to allow self biasing the amp and control the power reduction. It has no effect whatsoever on the tone. The AFD100 is a 1 channel amp based on the AFD album tone, not a #39 replica, which never tried to be and built to 2010 standards.

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago There is firmware in everything around us, from your washing machine, elevator... you also trust your life riding a fast car with plenty of electronic controls caring of your safety. No reason why an amplifier cannot have those. In fact these type of controls are quite common in many other audio devices like PA power amplifiers...

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @ adrien, electrolytics today are much smaller than 40 years ago and keep being smaller and smaller apart from having better characteristics and lifespan than those old big cans. The amplifier is quieter and more reliable using modern ones ;-)

Will there be any differences in the electronics or cosmetics between the Limited Edition and Collector Editions? Hopefully it's just the "candy" coming with the amps that will be different.

@Scion, tube amps have pcb mounted sockets since the early 80s and, apart from internet forums, seems that manufacturers of tube amps of all kinds and prices have found no problem using them.

pross

Posted 1 year ago by pross While Auto biasing and power scaling sounds like a great idea for me it's another thing to break.Older amps are easily repaired.Anytime you introduce firmware or other IC's you have the problem of obsolescence. It may not affect the sound of the amp but how long will marshall supply parts for the circuit? It can easily be removed from the amp if you have a little knowledge and a soldering iron.

Report

pross

Posted 1 year ago by pross I think i'd prefer a low watt version of the amp. Less the power scaling.

Report

Austin

Posted 1 year ago by Austin Pre-ordering does not lower the price of an amp, unless the store you order it from has great prices. What I'm saying is there will be plenty available new in stores for the first couple of months. And then if you miss that period and want one later you can buy one used.

Report

SlaashGNR

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Please reply to this because there will be a lot of fans who will agree that a settings booklet, recommended by Slash himself will be extremely helpful and every owner of one of these amps will be ever so greatful.

SlaashGNR

From those settings people could work off and tweak ever so slightly in order to satisfy there own needs.

It is difficult to quantify the gain, perhaps a bit less than a DSL or a bit less then a JVM in OD orange if you are familiar with those amps. Both modes take single coils well, #34 a bit bright perhaps, but the amp shines with humbuckers in my opinion.

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @Austin, he was referring to the way the amp sounded live regarding the "attack", it was way too punchy for him. Anyway don't think it was a massive amount but Slash has got a really discerning ear for his guitar tone.
He used the "punchy" amp in HK, then from Singapore onwards the corrected and so far final AFD100 amp.

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Try and get us a video of the amp being played (whether it is slash or not) with either a slash signature appetite guitar, or a les paul with slash's pickups. As in a video that is privately recorded in a recording room or whatever not like a concert video. that way we can really hear the sound of the afd100. Regards, Kyle.

gitarenkraak

Posted 1 year ago by gitarenkraak hey santiago, i saw footage of slash at the key club recently where he was using 2 stacks with AFD amps on top, is he using one for clean sounds as well? and those cabinets looked like new ones too, are they gonna be available too?

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @captainstupid, I only know that pre-orders are being taken. I don't know delivery dates and so, but if they say that the amp is reserved for you no reason to think it is not true ;-)
@SlaashGNR, riden21, etc, will try to arrange some sound samples soon. Unfortunately we were not allowed to post the ones that Slash recorded due to copyright issues and the likes...

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @gitarenkraak, I'd be more inclined to think that he is using his jubilee for clean sounds. The cabinets are also his usual ones, just decorated with the lady figure. So far AFD cabinets aren't planned.

Pre-orders were taken by www.musik-schmidt.de and www.rockshop.de. They say that they have a lot of enquiries so just write an e-mail and you'll see whats the state of affairs.

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR just buy marshall cabinets that have V30s, not v70s. That should really do the trick (as Slash recommended that himself). even a half stack would do fine i think. two cabinets wouldn't affect the sound, just make it a lot louder.

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR playing style and venue (picking stroke, the actual texture of your fingertips, and the strings on the guitar, AND the room you play in) will affect the sound of this amp. I sound stupid but I know there will be some amateur players with cash to splash will be reading these blogs thinking with this amp and a les paul with slash pickups i can play sweet child o mine like slash can.

Posted 1 year ago by captainstupid @steadytone: They don´t mention the amp, because it's not yet in their assortment. However, you can, or at least could, pre order it. Just ask them by phone or e-mail.
