Marshall AFD100

Blog » The Finer Details!

As we get ever closer to the impending launch in October of our most talked about and anticipated amplifier to date, we are pleased to announce that music stores across the globe are now officially taking pre-orders for the 2300 Limited Edition AFD100 heads.

We have received a number of questions asking what the difference is going to be between the general limited run and the Special Collectors Edition. Both units are essentially going to be similar in appearance, for example both will have the brushed silver front and rear panels and black covering, but the Collectors Edition will be personally hand signed by the man himself. Each unit will come complete with Slash's own personal settings which will be featured in the accompanying handbook, so you can always be sure of achieving that great AFD tone. Both units will come with a Certificate of Authenticity as well as another certificate which will be signed by those staff in our UK factory that are involved in the design and build process of each individual amplifier. Included in the sale of the general limited head will be a signature dust cover, a specially designed AFD Owners Club t-shirt plus a number of other accessories that will be announced in a future blog. The Collectors Edition head will be sold with it's very own AFD Slash signature flight case and AFD Owners Club work shirt as well as other top quality accessories which too will be confirmed at a later date.

Please, confirm this Marshal :) And tell us where to listen to professionally recorded sound samples so we can judge it!

2 it gives u less gain than input 1, it could be could for single coils or u can use it to jump the channels with a Y cable

Posted 1 year ago by StuartC Santiago, I was wondering if you knew if Slash has been using both modes on the amp live ? if so any ideas which mode for what songs??
If anyone is after a JCM2555 I've just put my no.2 head on ebay to fund this marvellous creation!!!

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR voodoo.child, the amp has a clean channel from what i have read in earlier posts. Also you'll find that a Les Paul through a marshall with a touch of reverb will give you a great similar sounding clean tone. my marshall mg30dfx does . . . and that is only a little practise amp! by the way santiago . . . will there be a built in reverb knob/switch on the afd100?

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @riden21, I don't know when but of course there will be more updates soon.
@fdasilva, yes, since the current through the valve is reduced the dissipated power too.
@voodoo.child, no, there is no clean channel. Slash uses a second amp for cleans.

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @StuartC, as far as I know he only uses the AFD mode and never changes the settings.
@SlaashGNR, no there is no reverb in the AFD100. You always can add it through the FX loop which is footswitchable.

Report

fdasilva

Posted 1 year ago by fdasilva Slash seems to have its new cabs : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA_nrAtKKKg He must still use V30 speakers but the cabs look like the MR1960TV model which cannot be the case because they are loaded with Greenback. All the more, Santiago always said there would not be a matching cab with the AFD100 head. So what are these cabs ? (My guess a matching cab for the special edition only ?)

Posted 1 year ago by voodoo.child santiago,, can you run a clean channel through an effects loop somehow,,? i really want to get this amp, but if i can`t run clean as well, then i can not justify running around with two amps!

Report

SlaashGNR

Posted 1 year ago by SlaashGNR Is there an effects loop coming with the amp? So reverb can be added to the sound? Sweet child O' mine has quite alot of reverb in the intro and solo's.

stoof

Posted 1 year ago by stoof hi Santiago. To get the better sound as a reasonnable volume, is it better to crank the master volume and lower the power control, or keep the power control cranked and lower the master volume ? thanks !

Report

jonthebass

Posted 1 year ago by jonthebass @stoof - I would say that the answer is crank the Master Volume up and back off the Power Control.
@SlaashGNR - Read the earlier blogs Dude. Nothing like a bit of research to help answer your questions that have been answered already!
@voodoo.child - It's a one channel amp. Clean OR dirty, not both. You could back your guitar's volume off old school style to clean it up though...

Amp forums says that g12 speaker is better for the tone then the Celestion Vintage 30 equiped 1960 cabinets.
What cabinet did you do the testing with at the lab?

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @fdasilva, those cabinets have V30s, they have been recovered for the tour.
@voodoo.child, in theory you can take the guitar signal from the lower input to an external preamp and connect the preamp output to the FX loop return. That way you have a 2 channel amp. You may face ground loop hum but that can be solved with proper wiring

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @SlaashGNR, yes the amp has FX loop
@stoof , yes keep the master high (not necessarily full) and lower the volume with the power control. Slash has the Master around 1-2 o'clock

Report

Santiago

Posted 1 year ago by Santiago @@Fredrik, all Celestion 12" guitar speakers are called G12. The vintage 30s are G12-Vintage30 for example. In any case there is not such thing as "better", it is a matter of personal preference.
I've used different speakers but Slash plays through V30s

Report

surfnorthwest

Posted 1 year ago by surfnorthwest Players underestimate the difference in speakers play in your overall tone.

If you are going to be doing hard rock to metal with the amp I would look first to get a Marshall 1960BV with G12 Vintage speakers, or you could go with the beefier 1960A with the G12T-75s.

If you are going to be doing classic rock and blues I would look to either a Vintage 1960AX or a 425A with Greenbacks.

JHall55

Posted 1 year ago by JHall55 Guys alot of your questions are answered in previous blogs. Here's a recap for those just joining us:
One channel, no matching cab, Slash uses Marshall 1960av/bv cabs (w/V30's in them), no reverb, yes effects loop, comes with a booklet with the amp settings for AFD (if you want a book with ALL of Slash's GUITAR settings...come on, really???).

Marker

Posted 1 year ago by Marker I already ordered mine, around 1350 Euro. Don't wait to much, you might no get it.... plus it sounds like the extra-features of the collectors edition will be a Slash autograph, a custom flight case and other acessories at probably a much higher price. The amp features and sound will be the same.
Don't risk loosing this chance of having the normal version while you can still find it.

I was also told the Special Edition would be £4k! THIS IS NOT FACT, JUST WHAT I WAS TOLD.
